Only Budapest-USA direct flight cancelled

We wrote in December 2021 that the direct flight from Budapest to New York JFK would be re-established in 2022 summer. The Polish airline LOT did so, but it seems they overruled their decision for some reason. A Hungarian news website said they could no longer book a flight for next summer in LOT’s system. Now we can only get to New York from Budapest with a connecting flight from Warsaw.

No direct flight from Budapest to New York

According to airportal.hu, direct one-way and return flights between Budapest and New York JFK Airport disappeared from the booking system of LOT, Poland’s national airline. Passengers now must change flights in Warsaw, provided they prefer to travel from Budapest to the Big Apple with the Polish carrier.

LOT would have commuted between New York and Budapest from 2 June 2023 thrice a week (Tuesday, Friday, Sunday) after a pause between this September and next June. However, those flights disappeared by Wednesday from the airlines’s booking system.

People having a seat on the summer flights received an email about the cancellation. They offered flights for the same days but with a change in Warsaw, meaning that the direct option to travel between the USA and Hungary ended.

More flights to South Korea

The Hungarian travel website said that the LOT’s flights from Budapest to New York stopped operating in September. The airline planned to re-establish the service on 2 June 2023. It seems the Polish company will move its Budapest capacities to Warsaw. From next June, LOT will increase the number of flights departing the Polish capital towards New York from 11 to 14.

Interestingly, the LOT will increase the frequency in the Budapest-Seoul direction. From 27 March 2023, 3 flights will take off from Budapest Airport to the South Korean capital instead of the current two. The Polish carrier will fly with Boeing 787-9 planes on the 10 hours flight.

Airportal.hu sent its questions to the press office of the Polish airline on the issue but has not received an answer yet. But they promised to update their article as soon as LOT replies.
